Don Pedro Rivas

We would hear so much stories about our Great Grandfather, but our favorite was when he lost half his left hand. Every Sunday he would load 10-12 Mules with bottles of Mezcal and make the dangerous journey from El Jarral Guanajuato through the Sierra and into Guanajuato Capital, the journey was dangerous because the Sierra was filled with mountain bandits.

Unbeknownst to Don Pedro he was being carefully watched by a group of Bandidos, they knew every time he made his trip back he had dispatched all the Mezcal and therefore was carrying money. Don Pedro stood about 6' 4" so he was no easy pickins, when the group of degenerates launched their attack they went straight for the head with a machete. Don Pedro managed to catch the machete in mid air forfeiting his hand. However our great grandfather got the best of them and overpowered them. I personally like this story because of the turmoil in Mexico as well as the constant obstacles life throws at you, like my great grandfather, you must keep pushing forward and you must persevere. He continued the distribution of mezcal and was very successful in other endeavors. Fast-forward to 2023, three generations later his four great grandsons will continue his legacy and honor Don Pedro Rivas’s life, dedication, bravery and service and preserve a little taste of Mexican history with every shot. Salud.

Our Ancenstral Land

Handcrafted in the heart of Guanajuato, our mezcal is produced in the historic Valle de San Francisco, Jaral de Berrio. Inspired by the legacy of our forefather, Don Pedro Rivas, who once traversed these lands as a dedicated mezcalero, each bottle reflects the spirit of our heritage and the unique essence of this storied region.

Guanajuato's unique climate makes it an ideal region for producing exceptional mezcal. With its semi-arid weather, warm days, and cool nights, the agave plants thrive in optimal conditions, enhancing their natural sugar content and flavor complexity. The region's mineral-rich soils, shaped by volcanic activity, further contribute to the agave's distinct character, imparting earthy and robust notes to the mezcal. These conditions, combined with centuries of traditional craftsmanship, create a truly unique spirit that reflects the heart and soul of Guanajuato.

Our Present

For generations, mezcal has been more than just a drink for the Rivas family—it has been a symbol of tradition, love, and unyielding dedication to our roots. It all began with our great-grandfather, Don Pedro Rivas, a proud mezcalero who walked the rugged lands of Guanajuato, sharing the spirit of his craft. His passion for mezcal wasn’t just about the drink—it was about preserving a piece of our heritage, a connection to the Valle de San Francisco in Jaral de Berrio.

Decades later, his legacy still burns brightly in our hearts. As children, we—Uriel, Jorge, Cristian, and Jossue—grew up hearing stories of Don Pedro’s journeys, the friendships he forged, and the mezcal he lovingly shared. We would eagerly wait for those special trips back to Guanajuato, where our family would reconnect with the land that shaped us. Every visit was a homecoming, a chance to immerse ourselves in the stories etched into the hills and the agave fields.

We’d bring back gallons of "Jaral," the same mezcal our great-grandfather once distributed, and share it with friends and family. Those moments of pouring mezcal from jars, recounting family tales, and seeing the joy it brought to others planted a seed in us—a determination to keep this legacy alive.

Today, as the Rivas brothers, we carry that torch forward, not just as mezcaleros but as custodians of a tradition that spans three generations. Every bottle of our mezcal is a tribute to Don Pedro’s love for his craft, the lands of Guanajuato, and the unbreakable bond of family. We are honored to share with the world the same spirit that has connected us to our ancestors, one sip at a time.
